Operating Equipment Safely

What is the number one risk in operating equipment?

COMPLACENCY.
  • Over-familiarity and comfort and convenience features on machines often make people "too comfortable"; they forget the dangers.
  •
Safety equipment overview: Most Important - Your Clothes
  • Recommended attire is a close-fitting long sleeved shirt or sweatshirt, long pants, closed-toed shoes and as little jewely as practical (and no loose jewelry or unrestrained hair).
  • Earplugs and eye protection are a requirement while doing extended work and working with Portable Power Equipment.
  • Many accidents happen not when someone has prepared and been working on a piece of equipment all day long, but when they just jump on for a few minutes to do something - just like the majority of car accidents don't happen on the highway, but when people are running errands near their home.

    Safe Operation Techniques:

    Equipment Bullets
  • Do a "systems check" before you get onboard.
  • Buckle your seatbelt.
  • Remember to start the equipment on level ground, in neutral, without implements engaged.
  • Beware the blade engagement on certain machines.
  • Ensure lights are on in almost all operating conditions, hazards when traveling on a tractor for short distances on a road.
  • Always have someone assist with putting on and taking off implements, even though "you can do it by yourself".
  • Always have ballast, watch out for tipping.
  • Do not mow in reverse if you can help it.
  •
    Work Area Bullets
  • Also do a check of where you're going to work...if mowing, for instance, make sure the yard is clear of debris and toys, and that children and pets are safely out of the area.
  • Drive up and down hills, not along them.
  •
